Smartness is a personal quality showing someone applying their knowledge to achieve a goal, while selfishness is a behaviour where one will put their own interests above the interest of others. One possible reason why smart people may appear more selfish to bystanders is because they do not go around giving everyone free services unless they have clear purposes or benefits of doing so.
