Opinions differ on whether media should serve the entertainment or educational purpose. While it is true that media nowadays mainly focuses on news updates and amusement, I believe that educational values are equally important.
On the one hand, media, at the present time, is playing its prominent role in entertainment. People find themselves interested by easily and rapidly updating the latest news and information everywhere in the world just by watching television or browsing the internet. Also, more and more television programmes, game shows or reality shows have been produced and broadcasted in order to meet the increasingly-high needs of human in amusement and stress-free activities. Additionally, the developments of modern devices and technologies have made media, in entertainment terms, become more accessible.
On the other hand, the educational aspect of media should not be underestimated. It is an undeniable fact that media has certain effects on viewers, especially children and teenagers. Therefore, if the contents of television shows were frequently inappropriate, such as related to violence, bad language or sexual scenes, unwanted consequences would arise and affect negatively not only individuals but also a whole society. In order to prevent the undesirable scenario from happening, educational and positive values should be emphasised. The most practical way to do this is that governments and relevant authorities should issue education-based guidelines and regulations to control and supervise the media’s contents, together with a strong commitment to implementation.
In conclusion, even though people have different views about which one between two aspects, entertainment or education, should media have an emphasis on, personally I am in agreement with the latter due to the strong influence that media can have over people.
