The use of social media, such as Facebook, Twitter are replacing face-to-face contact in this century. Do you think the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

It is the fact that social networking media has arisen as the major replacement for direct communication for a few recent decades. While this trend definitely introduces both pros and cons, I believe the benefits do outweigh the drawbacks.
On the one hand, the rise of cyber-world would create young generations with poor real-life skills and high preference for online existence. Specifically, frequent users of social media are excellent at expressing their ideas and opinions on the internet, rather than real life communication. Also, as soon as something in the online world does not happen as expected, they tend to hit the quit button to run away from trouble. Consequently, these people find themselves struggling when they have to deal with difficult situations in reality. Furthermore, it is easier to become a totally different person and get famous on the internet by telling lies and showing perfectly-edited pictures or videos. This explains why some people value the virtual life over anything and invest a lot on strengthening their online identity.
On the other hand, contacting via social networking sites show certain benefits involving in connectivity, business development and building communities. Firstly, thanks to social media, people from anywhere can connect with anyone regardless of distance and time. This would bring about follow-up advantages such as more convenient access to education, as well as facilitation for information updates. Secondly, enterprises can easily approach their targeted customers via online advertising and promotion. As a result, business reputation and brand awareness would increase significantly. Finally, social networking sites with information sharing mechanism help to improve understanding between different religions, beliefs, regions, thereby reducing discrimination. Similarly, members of various communities can connect to discuss and share interests they have in common.
In conclusion, despite several disadvantages, the upside of social media is more important as it provides contributing factors to the world’s progress regarding convenient connectivity, business expansion and promotion of extensive understanding.
