Reasons for learning a foreign language

(Reading time: 2 - 4 minutes)

Đề IELTS Cambridge 11 - Test 3

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Opinions are divided on whether travelling or working abroad is the exclusive motivation for learning foreign languages, or there are more reasons besides that. Personally, I think people have numerous inspirational motives rather than just migration to study a new language.

On the one hand, it is certainly true that one of the main motivations for being bilingual or multilingual is to explore different parts of the world or to have a better job overseas. In terms of the former, being able to visit various countries with little fear of language barriers appears to be the most popular reason for youngsters to keep them at language schools. Turning to the latter, being bilingual or multilingual is always a noticeable competitive advantage in the labour market to attract overseas employers and develop one’s career prospects beyond domestic boundaries. Based on these reasons, travelling or working abroad tends to stand out as the most major reason for learning foreign languages.

On the other hand, I believe that there are other reasons for individuals to become a language learner. First, admiration for celebrities is rising as the most inspirational motive at the present time. 'Korean wave' would be the best example for this since the more fans Korean idols have, the more prospective learners for the Korean language. In addition, there are many people who study a foreign language just because they are interested in the culture and customs of a country using that language. Or, simply being curious about pronunciation, grammar, and writing system of a language would be enough to inspire people to study. For instance, pictorial languages such as Chinese, Korean or Japanese can attract learners thanks to its unique and meaningful writing characters.

In conclusion, even though overseas travel and employment are thought by some people as the most major reason to study another language, it seems to me that there are obviously further inspirations causing people to try to become multilingual.

It is thought by some people that studying a foreign language is just to visit or work overseas. However, opponents of this idea believe that there are more positive purposes to learn another language besides mother tongue, and this is also the opinion that I support.

On the one hand, it is certainly true that one of the main motivations for being bilingual or multilingual is to explore different parts of the world or to have a better job in foreign nations. First, being able to visit many countries in the world with little language barriers tends to be the most popular reason for youngsters to study a foreign language. Second, being bilingual or multilingual will definitely be a competitive advantage in the labour market. It helps people to attract overseas employers and expand job opportunities beyond their home country.

On the other hand, I think that it would be more than just two reasons mentioned above for a person to learn a new language. There are some people who choose to study another language just because they are interested in the culture and customs of a country which that language is spoken. In addition, being curious about grammar, vocabulary or writing system of a language is also another motive for them to study. The admiration for foreign idols helps a language to have more leaners as well. For example, the rise of Korean music and movies results in a large number of fans enrolling in Korean language courses to get close to their favourite idols.

In conclusion, even though that learning a foreign language facilitates people future career and helps them to experience overseas trips, it seems to me that there are other significant factors for someone to invest time and effort in learning a new language.
