Opinions differ on whether it is acceptable or not to conduct medical research on animals. Personally, I completely agree with the viewpoint that the use of such living beings in experiments is essential.
On the one hand, being opposed to animal testing is valid for several reasons. First, animals used in medical research are commonly mistreated, such as being subjected to force-feeding, food and water deprivation or long periods of physical restraints. Therefore, it is cruel to make other living beings suffer for the sake of humans. Animals, moreover, can suffer like humans do and all suffering is undesirable. Experimenting on animals because they have no cognitive ability, language or moral judgment like humans do is unfair and morally unacceptable.
On the other hand, it seems to me that animal testing is indispensable in developing new cures and treatments. The bodies of humans and animals are extremely complex, so it is a must to test new medicines on living systems to test the effectiveness and reduce unwanted side effects. This leads to the fact that animals must be used in cases when using humans is forbidden, as there are a lot of ethical considerations and laws against using humans as testing subjects. The lives of human volunteers should not be put in danger when testing the effectiveness of new drugs, and therefore using animals as a replacement for human subjects is appropriate and acceptable.
In conclusion, although some people claim that it is unacceptable to conduct medical research on animals, it seems that animal testing is necessary thanks to its contribution to the development of new drugs.
