The chart shows values of book sales at one particular chain of bookshops over a 5-year period from 2000 to 2004.
Overall, ladies romantic fiction was the best selling genre by value, and it became more popular throughout the period. Meanwhile, children’s books also increased in popularity, whereas educational books became less popular.
At the start of the period, ladies romantic fiction was the most popular type of book with its sales standing at $45 million, while children’s books and educational books achieved around $38 million and $33 million in sales respectively. Thereafter, sales of ladies fiction continued increasing gradually over the next four years and showed a remarkable increase at the end of the period from $53 million in 2004. Similarly, the sales value of children’s books also showed a marked increase, which had been rising steadily over the following four years and ended the period at over $40 million.
In contrast to the other two categories of books, there was a decline in the value of educational book sales, which fell from around $38 million to $30 million in 2004, in spite of levelling off temporarily at around $33 million in the middle of the period shown.
