Opinions are divided on whether the growth in trading and cultural contact among nations is a good step forward or a loss of national identities. Personally, I think that this trend is the progress contributing to the development of the world in general and each country in particular.

It is certainly true that the exchange of information and activities in the whole world makes it harder for any single national identity to keep its unique features. As the world becomes ‘flatter’, the features of one nation are influenced by outstanding values of other leading countries rather than theirs. Music would be the best example when youngsters in many countries are no longer listen to their traditional music and would spend time enjoying songs of Korean or the US-UK whose music industries are superior globally. Therefore, it is understandable that some people concern that the initial good intentions of integration now will descend into assimilation degenerating national identification.

On the other hand, I believe that it is more beneficial to increase interdependence between nations including economic and cultural exchanges. Firstly, increasing trade facilitation is always the most crucial measure to expand import and export activities and encourage economic growth. Secondly, when countries’ economies are interconnected through international trade, they are unlikely to go to war with each other making the world more peaceful. Finally, more understanding of different cultures will promote greater acceptance towards the diversity of the world regarding various aspects, such as religions, races, history, language and etiquette. The more people appreciate others’ differences, the less judgement and discrimination.

In conclusion, it seems to me that a loss of national identity is inevitable, but the benefits gaining from international trading and cultural exchanges do outweigh the drawbacks.
