Maps là dạng bài khó nhất trong tất cả các dạng bài trong Writing Task 1. Tuy nhiên, chúng ta vẫn có thể có một cách đi khoa học để có được 1 bài Writing thỏa mãn các yêu cầu đề bài cũng như là kịp thời gian để đầu tư cho Task 2.
Dạng bài Map phổ biến trong Task 1
Map là một dạng trong những dạng bài khó của IELTS Writing Task 1, thường sẽ có hai dạng bài phổ biến sau đây:
DẠNG 1: MỘT BẢN ĐỒ
Dạng bài này yêu cầu thí sinh miêu tả một bản đồ và sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn. Dạng bài này các bạn chỉ sử dụng các ngôn ngữ mang tính chất mô tả vị trí và phương hướng.
Dạng bài này thường rất hiếm gặp.
DẠNG 2: NHIỀU BẢN ĐỒ
Dạng bài này thường đưa ra hai bản đồ của một địa điểm vào hai năm khác nhau. Đây là dạng bài phổ biến nhất của Map. Với dạng này, bên cạnh việc mô tả vị trí và phương hướng của các vật thể có mặt trên bản đồ, các bạn cần đưa ra các sự so sánh về mặt thời gian, ví dụ như tòa nhà A được thêm vào, tòa nhà B bị phá hủy, con đường được kéo dài ra, bãi đỗ xe được chuyển từ góc phía Nam sang góc phía Bắc…
Cấu trúc quan trọng cho Map
INTRODUCTION
Cũng giống như những dạng bài khác, người viết cần paraphrase lại đề bài.
OVERVIEW
Phần Overview, chúng ta cần đưa ra từ 1-2 đặc điểm nổi bật nhất của bản đồ, thường là sự thêm vào hay biến mất của một số tòa nhà hay địa điểm lớn.
- Với dạng bài Map không có dòng thời gian: chỉ dùng ngôn ngữ mô tả (mô tả về vị trí, phương hướng, khoảng cách, so sánh về kích thước)
- Với dạng bài Map có dòng thời gian: Kết hợp sử dụng ngôn ngữ mô tả và ngôn ngữ “xu hướng” (bao gồm các sự thay đổi như to ra, nhỏ lại, xuất hiện, biến mất)
BODY
Về cách chia body của dạng bài này, chúng ta thường có hai cách chia:
Cách 1: Chia về mặt địa lý
Chia về mặt địa lý là cách đơn giản và phổ biến nhất. Chúng ta sẽ chia bản đồ thành hai phần, theo trục trái-phải, hoặc theo trục trên-dưới. Sau đó, mỗi body các bạn sẽ dành để miêu tả một phần của bản đồ.
Cách 2: Chia về mặt “mức độ thay đổi”
Đây là cách phức tạp hơn. Một body các bạn sẽ mô tả các địa điểm hoặc tòa nhà chứng kiến nhiều sự thay đổi, body còn lại sẽ mô tả các đối tượng trên bản đồ chỉ thay đổi nhẹ, hoặc giữ nguyên.
TỪ VỰNG
Trong dạng bài Map, chúng ta cần sử dụng hai loại ngôn ngữ:
1. Ngôn ngữ miêu tả vị trí các ngôi nhà, khu vườn, nhà máy, cây cầu…trên bản đồ. Loại ngôn ngữ này bao gồm các giới từ và cụm giới chỉ vị trí (trên, dưới, trái, phải, bên cạnh, đối diện) và chỉ phương hướng (đông, tây, nam, bắc)
2. Ngôn ngữ miêu tả sự thay đổi, ví dụ như sự biến mất của một ngôi nhà, sự xuất hiện của các cửa hàng….

Look at the two maps. Then choose the correct words to complete the sentences.

Overall/ To begin, it can be seen that the village has undergone expansion and enlargement across nearly all regions, with the most prominent alteration being the addition of numerous houses.
Although / To begin with, the biggest transformation from these maps is that a new road was built around the village. As a result,/ Thanks to this significant development, the village has experienced various new developments, including the construction of new houses both within the central area and on the outskirts of the village. In addition/ As a result , a new shopping centre was built on the southern edge of the village. As a result of/ Overall this, it can be observed that the small shop situated in the center of the village has vanished, however/ whereas the restaurant has remained situated in its original position at the heart of the village. Although/ However the school was still in the centre, it was moved from the north to the south of the village.
EXERCISE 3:
Look at the maps. Then put the sentences in the correct order to complete the report.
A.The main difference between the two sites is that S1 is outside the town, whereas S2 is in the town centre.
B.S2 is also close to the housing area, which surrounds the town centre.
C.The map shows two potential locations (S1 and S2) for a new supermarket in a town called Garlsdon.
D.By contrast, S1 lies on the main road to Hindon, but it would be more difficult to reach from Bransdon and Cransdon.
E.The sites can also be compared in terms of access by road or rail, and their positions relative to three smaller towns.
F.There are main roads from Hindon, Bransdon and Cransdon to Garlsdon town centre, but this is a no traffic zone, so there would be no access to S2 by car.
G.Looking at the information in more detail, S1 is in the countryside to the north west of Garlsdon,but it is close to the residential area of the town.
H.Both supermarket sites are close to the railway that runs through Garlsdon from Hindon to Cransdon.

The modification of a small village called Wells-on-the-Water is (1)………………. in the given maps.

The given maps depict an area of a museum and the transformation that took place there over a ten-year period, starting in 2008.
Overall, there were some significant changes to the layout of the museum, some of which include the relocation of some facilities and addition of a new restaurant, making the permanent exhibition rooms undergoing a reduction in size. In contrast, the central garden and the ticket box still remained unchanged.
Looking first at the top half and of the museum, one of the most striking alterations was the construction of a new restaurant, which was located in the top-left hand corner. The cafe next to it remained in the same place, yet it was reduced in size, enabling the addition of an adjacent toilet to the right.
In the center of the layout, there was a spacious garden. Although its location and size remained unaltered, a water fountain and a cafe sitting area had been added to it. The temporary exhibition room was also relocated from the bottom left-hand corner to the left of the garden, with its size enlarged.
Turning to the bottom half space, while the ticket box in the entrance was unchanged, the shop and the area to keep bags and coats was moved from the right to the left of the entrance, where the temporary exhibition room used to occupy.
