As it turned out, the more I learned the more I was attracted to this Mandarin language. And I figured out that I did have a knack for learning foreign languages. I’m not saying that it was some piece of cake or something, but I could absorb the language faster than my peers. And luckily, it was my ability that catch my teacher’s attention, and she decided to have me join a local team to compete in a region Chinese speaking contest called Chinese Bridge in which the winning team would had a chance to represent Vietnam to enter the International Chinese Bridge and compete with other 200 countries.

The best competition I took part in was a speech competition. At that time, I was studying in a high school. 

One day, after I finished my class, and was going back home, I suddenly saw the poster on the wall. The title was really striking. When I knew that our school was going to organize such a competition, I was not quite sure whether I would join the competition or not. It asked us to give a prepared speech for 15 minutes, and then I would answer the questions of the judges. After that, I should give a spontaneous speech for ten minutes. 

I was not sure whether I should take part in the competition. I was not very good at standing in front of a large audience and giving a public speech. I knew that I had to prepare a lot before the competition. I thought that was a good opportunity for me to explore my potential. Like a famous person said, and I can’t remember his name, “Nobody can beat you, but yourself.” I chose to be in the competition as it would be an opportunity to overcome my shyness and nervousness in public. When I was a student there were many awards for the best students and it was an honour to win one of them. Each year there was a prize for the best student in Greek (the Greek Language) and details of this were posted on the noticeboard. The test involved two parts. The first part was to translate two passages from Greek into English and in the second part you were given quotations in Greek and you had to write comments in English about the grammar and syntax contained in the sentences. 

I applied to take this competition and the examination lasted for three hours. A week later all the examination marks were put on the noticeboard, which was rather unfair to those who had done badly. My name was on the top of the list: I had gained the highest mark of 71%, only 1% more than the next candidate. He was furious because he expected to win, but he did win prizes in other subjects. 

The prize I won was not a great one, it was in tokens to buy books for further study and I bought a book in Greek. I had never won a prize when I was at school and this was the only prize I ever won. I still feel rather proud about it.

Câu hỏi 1: Why do you think some school teachers use competitions as class activities?

Theo bạn thì tại sao một vài giáo viên trong trường lại dùng các cuộc thi như là những hoạt động trong lớp học?

Thí sinh nên nêu ra từng lí do một, những lí do chính thì nên nêu cụ thể hơn, ví dụ: để tạo động lực cho học viên, gây ra áp lực để học sinh cố gắng hơn, tạo hứng thú, khuấy động không khí lớp…

I think that some teachers use competitions in the classroom because they grab the interest of the students. Many people are naturally competitive, often without realizing it. Competition also makes things more interesting.

In some ways schools have become less competitive than they used to be and I think standards have fallen. In Britain they have tried to have less competition in school and make all pupils do the same work. This has been disastrous. Only average children are catered for. You would not have a clothing store that had just one size of clothing for a certain age and try to make all sizes of children fit this garment. Why do this to children’s education?

I would guess that some advantages to intensive training at a young age are that the child becomes goal focused and learns early that they must work hard in life to achieve something. Perhaps they will spend all their time training instead of maintaining friendships and doing their schoolwork.

Obviously, competitions can make people nervious and insecure because they have to compete with others to win the prize. However, sports stars must surely be used to competition. After all，the word “star” suggests that they are professional, and they must know that competition is part of the job.So I think competitions give them pressure to practive harder and give better performance.
