1. Maps/Plan Labelling trong Listening là gì?

Trong câu hỏi này bạn cần phải điền một từ hoặc 1 cụm từ phù hợp từ danh sách để hoàn thành bài maps. Thông thường, dạng bài map labelling sẽ xuất hiện ở section 2 và là một dạng bài rất “khoai” với những bạn nào dễ bị lost track, mù phương hướng, mù đường, dễ mất tập trung. Đây cũng là dạng khá ít ra trong Section 2 hơn những dạng bài khác, nhưng một khi đã ra thì thí sinh rất sợ gặp dạng này vì dễ mất điểm, sai 1 câu hoặc mất tập trung 1 câu thôi là những câu khác cũng đi luôn.

Dạng bài nãy sẽ bao gồm 1 tờ maps (kiểu bản đồ đơn giản) và đục lỗ những vị trí, tên  các phòng, tên nơi chốn để cho các bạn tìm đáp án mà điền vào. Nếu có tâm maps sẽ cho 1 cái la bàn chỉ Đông tây Nam bắc nhỏ nhỏ ở góc trái/phải để chúng ta đỡ lạc phương hướng cho ai mù đường. Nếu không thì để làm thế nào không bị mất phương hướng mình sẽ chỉ cho các bạn ở phần bên dưới sau. Nhiệm vụ của chúng ta là chỉ theo audio, thấy họ đang miêu tả vị trí của chỗ nào thì nghe kỹ rồi chọn đúng, nghe thì có vẻ đơn giản nhưng một khi đã sai câu đầu hoặc mất tập trung 1 câu thôi, thì bạn sẽ rất dễ bị hoảng ở những câu sau, vì audio họ đọc 1 lượt không có quãng nghỉ lâu, nên key cho bài map này là phải CỰC KỲ TẬP TRUNG và biết người ta đang nói tới đâu và mình đang ở đâu.

2. Các bước làm bài Maps/Plan Labelling

Bước 1: Vẽ 4 hướng + khoanh tròn tên địa danh xung quanh

Nếu là bài bản đồ, thì các bạn có thể vẽ một cái la bàn thật to, đè lên maps, đè lên chữ  luôn để cho dễ đi phương hướng, không bị lạc. Như hình bên dưới:

Cho dễ nhớ là chữ “NEWS” theo thự tứ viết giống chữ “Z”.

Sau đó khoanh tròn những tên địa danh, tên đường, sao cho thật nổi bật để không bị “lạc” khi người ta chỉ đường, bạn cố gắng dành 30 giây trước khi vào bài nghe nhìn và học thuộc bản đồ là tốt nhất, nhớ tên đường, nhớ tên địa danh xung quanh.

Bước 2: Nghe theo đường bút chì

Khi audio chạy, bạn lấy cây bút chì vẽ theo đường họ hướng dẫn, luôn để đầu bút chì bắt đầu từ điểm xuất phát, và hãy nghe xem ĐIỂM XUẤT PHÁT là điểm nào, nằm ở đâu. Và sau khi nghe được đáp án 1 rồi, thì để đầu bút chì tiếp ở vị trí 1 luôn hay lại quay trở về điểm xuất phát, phải nghe cho rõ. Luôn men theo đường bút chì để không bị lạc đường, theo hình sau:

 

Bước 3: Chọn đáp án

Có một điều mình luôn làm khi chọn đáp án đó là vừa chọn vừa phải loại trừ đáp án sai? Như thế nào? Đó là ghi thẳng vào bản đồ đáp án mình chọn luôn, nhưng không ghi chữ mà ghi số. Ví dụ như sau:

Vị trí D sẽ ghi luôn câu 17, như vậy loại trừ được 1 vị trí D

Tương tự vị trí G cho câu 18

Và nếu vị trí nào mình biết người ta lừa, nhắc đến trong Audio nhưng không phải đáp án thì gạch bỏ bằng dấu “x” như vị trí “I” trong hình.

Vậy là loại trừ được kha khá đáp án rồi đó!

 

3. Một số lưu ý

Một số từ vựng bạn nên học để làm bài dạng này cho hiệu quả:

Welcome all of you. Can everybody you see and hear me? Good. I'm David your guide for this tour of the Mangrove Tree resort. I'll start today with some general background information. As there have been a number of changes made. I printed the map of the new complex for each of you and I just like to point out where everything is, and then you can take a look at it for yourself. Basically the best feature of our new location is that we have our own private beach, which is on the left and accessible directly from the hotel. Now we're standing at the information desk and I'm going to look at the views in each direction. Out to the West there’s a gift shop where guests can shop for small trinkets made by local villagers from shells and starfish. If you look carefully up there on the other side of the restaurant, there's a state of the art spa facility (11), just next to the grove of palm trees, where guests can have treatments including massage or detoxify  their body in the steam room. A major drawback of our previous hotel complex was that there was no room for an onsite helicopter port, which meant that our most important guests were forced to commute from the local airport. As we were unable to construct a suitable facility on the eastern side, we have constructed a large heliport to the north. Guests wishing to stretch their legs after a long flight can simply head south to the tennis courts (13) for a match on our splendidly manicured courts. Now if you look in front of you there's a swimming pool in the centre (14) equipped with slides and a diving board, which is the main feature of the new complex and is overlooked by all of the other buildings. We have decided to maintain the family friendly status of our original hotel. However, from guests, we have come to realize that parents also enjoytime to relax without having to look after their children. Therefore we have constructed a fun play centre where parents can leave their children with a trained childminder and take some time for themselves. This facility is located just to the north of the swimming pool (15) and is covered with a small canopy to protect the children from the sun. Many of our working guests will require access to a quiet space for work. If you direct them just south of the swimming pool, theywill discover our conference centre (16) which comes complete with meeting rooms offices and Wi-Fi access. In order to access the Wi-Fi network, they should simply report to the information desk where an assistant will provide them with a personal password. This desk is situated just between the conference centre and the beach. Finally, the complex also contains a large sports centre where guests can enjoy our gym facilities and take part in sessions for yoga and pilots.

Overlooking the swimming pool from the south east, the centre offers stunning views of the entire complex and across the ocean (17).

Form Completion là một dạng bài thường gặp trong IELTS Listening và hôm nay chúng ta cùng bắt đầu thực hiện các bước làm bài và luyện tập nhé!

1. Form Completion trong IELTS Listening là gì?

Đây là dạng Điền vào biểu mẫu, form là biểu mẫu, completion là điền vào. Thông thường dạng Form Compeltion hay xuất hiện ở Section 1 của bài thi Listening. Sẽ bao gồm 1 đoạn hội thoại giữa 2 người nói chuyện qua điện thoại, thường có thể là đặt phòng khách sạn, hỏi về 1 tour du lịch, đặt sảnh tiệc, phỏng vấn 1 công việc nào nó để apply, gọi lên tổng đài hỏi về một thứ gì đó...

Trước khi làm bài cần phải chú ý SỐ LƯỢNG từ cần điền vào. Bạn hãy chú ý đề bài có thể yêu cầu ONE WORD ONLY hoặc NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS (đây là giới hạn số từ bạn được điền). Nếu bạn ghi đáp án vượt quá số lượng từ được điền thì đáp án của bạn vẫn sẽ tính là Sai. Và bạn cũng hãy để ý trong bài nếu yêu cầu có xuất hiện ‘from the text’ thì nghĩa là bạn không được thay đổi từ ở trong bài đọc, nhiệm vụ của bài chỉ cần tìm chính xác từ đó và điền vô Answer Sheet thôi nhé!

2. Các bước làm bài Form Completion

Bước 1: Khoanh tròn số từ cần điền

Như đã nhắc đến ở trên, các bạn cần xác định rõ số từ và số number cần điền. Lấy ví dụ trong đề bài có ghi “ONE WORD ONLY - Điền một từ duy nhất” ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER - Điền một từ và/ hoặc một số. Ví dụ 2002 cũng được tính là 1 từ, 1st December được tính là 1 từ và 1 số, chữ “st” ko tính.

Tương tự, NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER - Điền không quá hai từ và/hoặc một số. Thường trước khi làm bài chúng ta nên ghi ra, ví dụ One word Only thì ghi số 1 to khổng lồ rồi khoanh tròn lại trên đầu bài cho dễ nhớ.

Ví dụ bài này, mình cần điền “ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER” thì ta cần điền 1 từ hoặc 1 số, hoặc là Một từ và một số.

Bước 2: Đọc khoảng trống + Gạch chân keywords

Ở mỗi khoảng trống, cần điền vào loại từ gì, loại từ gì thích hợp ví dụ như verb, noun, adv, adj... Nếu bạn tinh tế hơn, sẽ nhận ra từ cần điền maybe đa số là noun (danh từ), vậy xác định rõ hơn từ cần điền là 1 cái tên (tên nhà hàng, nhân vật, khách sạn, công viên, con đường), con số (số điện thoại, số nhà, số postcode,...), hay một địa danh, màu sắc,....

Vị trí số 1 cần điền Nationality tức là quốc tịch của người nói, Vị trí số 2 sau antique (adj) thì phải là một (n), mà antique nghĩa là cổ nên theo sau là một đồ vật (thing) gì đó. Vị trí số 3 là cần điền tên căn hộ đó. Vị trí số 4 cần điền vào số tiền với đơn vị tiền tệ là pounds. Vị trí số 5 và 6 điền một danh từ, nhưng số 5 điền danh từ số ít vì có mạo từ “a”. Vị trí số 7 điền một nơi chốn vì có từ chỉ vị trí “outside”. Vị trí số 9 điền từ chỉ màu sắc cho mái tóc của nhân vật “he”. Vị trí số 10 điền một dãy số (hoặc bao gồm cả chữ nữa), hình thức là người đọc sẽ đánh vần.

Song song với việc đó, chúng ta sẽ tìm và gạch chân các keywords trong form, gạch chân những từ mang tính giúp bạn nghe từ cần điền tốt hơn, những từ nào nổi bật, mang thông tin quan trọng trong câu, chúng sẽ giúp chúng ta tìm thông tin trong bài nghe và điền thông tin vào khoảng trống. Đọc từ khóa của Listening không phức tạp như ở Reading, vì bạn không có nhiều thời gian mà sẽ nghe luôn ngay sau đó khoảng 30s – 1 phút, cho nên không cần phức tạp nhiều, đọc đơn giản thôi, nhanh chóng, nhé!

Bước 3: Lựa chọn đáp ám + Đọc kỹ nhừng từ vệ tinh

Theo mình nên tối giản các bước làm Listening sao cho ngắn gọn và đơn giản nhất nên phần chuẩn bị càng ít bước càng tốt, phần còn lại là để đôi tai bạn quyết định. Hãy lưu ý và nghe kỹ những từ xuất hiện xung quanh khoảng trống, những giới từ ví dụ như of, about, for.... Đây là những từ quan trọng có thể nghe trong bài audio, thông thường những giới từ (khoảng 60%) sẽ giữ nguyên trong bài audio, nên cần nghe kỹ và ghi nhớ giới từ và những từ xung quanh khoảng trống (mình gọi là những từ vệ tinh).

Ví dụ trong bài này, cần chú ý đến những từ vệ tinh như “of the...”, “some...”, “a...”, “an....”, “personal use of...”

Bước 4: Kiểm tra đáp án

Kiểm tra xem từ này có cần “s” hay không, kiểm tra lại từ mình đã điền đã phù hợp với loại từ cần điền vào chưa.

Kiểm tra xem đáp án mình điền vào là đáp án cuối cùng hay chưa, trong băng thường sẽ xuất hiện những đáp án gây nhiễu để khó xác định được đáp án chính xác, các bạn hãy chú ý lắng nghe những từ nối như “but”, “however”, “so”...

Kiểm tra xem đáp án mình ghi trong tờ đề khớp với đáp án trong “answer sheet” chưa, chính tả đúng chưa...

Nếu phân vân giữa 2 đáp án, thì nên nhìn những đáp án xung quanh để lựa chọn, khả năng đúng sẽ cao hơn, hoặc dùng phương pháp loại trừ vào phút cuối.

Đoạn Transcript sau đây bạn thử đọc và xem có bao nhiêu từ “but”, và có bao nhiêu từ “but” làm thay đổi nghĩa của câu nhé!

Good afternoon. I am ringing about the job I understand you have vacant. Oh yes. I'd like to find out some more information if I may.

Yes of course. Can I take your name?

It's Freddie Lee.

Okay, Freddie. What would you like to know?

First of all I'd like to know where your resort is located.

It's near the city center on Jamieson island. That's J A M I E S O N. Brilliant. That's only five minutes from me. I finish at my college on the 12th of May, so I'll be available for work from that date. Will there be any vacancies at that time?

Well summer is our busiest season, beginning on the 11th July (1), so that's when you will be starting.

Sounds good. And are there any age limitations?

That would depend on the place you're applying for. How old are you?

I'm 17.

Well we require our bartenders to be 18 or older, which means you would be working as a waiter (3) There are four vacancies. They were originally six. However we have since two of these.

Okay great. Could I ask about the pay?

We're offering five pounds fifty two pence an hour.

That's very good. My last job was four pounds forty five an hour. And can I also ask about what qualities you're looking for. Like any particular skills or experience?

We don't normally require applicants to have any past experience. However during the summer season we have weekly shows in which our waiters are asked to perform routines are very simple. So no dancing skills are needed however you will need to be able to sing (4) I have never sung professionally but I am keen on it and have been told that I'm talented. So I think this will be a good fit. Are there any other duties that I'd be responsible for?

As a waiter, you'll have a few different duties. We offer a table service so you'll have to take food orders from customers and carry the food from the kitchen to their tables. We like to give our customers a relaxed experience, so we'll also need you to supervise and take care of their children (5)

I have a baby sitter so I'm very comfortable doing that. Is there a play area for them in the resort?

Unfortunately, there is no facility for children here at the resort. But there is a large playground just down the road.

So I would just walk the children down to the playground each day?

No, the road is very busy and the pavements are so narrow that it's unsafe to take the children for walks there.

It would be very advantageous if you could drive (6), so that you can safely strap the children into the back seat and transport them back and forth.

I'm currently taking driving lessons. So if all goes well I should have my permit by the time I begin work.

We feel it's pretty good and we also offer some good fringe benefits for our employees.

Really?

Well because of the difficulties of getting public transport. If you're working after 10 o'clock we drive you home (7)

Okay that sounds fine.

Do you have a staff room where I would be able to eat my pack lunches?

All of our employees eat in the dining hall once our customers have finished eating their lunch.

We like to make sure that our employees are well nourished, so we would provide you with a meal every lunchtime (8) There is no need to bring in a pack lunch.

Wow that's good to know. I think that's all of the information that I needed. I'll be sure to post my application to you later today.

Okay sure. Once we have looked over your application we may ask you to come for an interview. We normally hold our interviews on Fridays. However, the manager is taking a long weekend this week. So the interview would be on Thursday (9). Is that okay for you?

That's good for me. Fine. Ten thirty a.m.. Yes fine. Would 10 o'clock be okay?

Perfect. And could you bring along a reference letter from your employer?

Yes. That's fine. No problem. Could you tell me what else I have to do?

Well, you need to come into the desk and fill out some forms. We need a document for ID, so a bank statement would be fine.

I've got that. And what else?

Well you need to bring a photo with you (10). Having said that it will be also a good idea for you to attach it to your application. This will help us to distinguish your application from the
others.

Okay. No problem. I have a couple of spares from when I renewed my passport.

We look forward to seeing you.

Okay. Thank you so much. You've been very helpful.

No problem. Goodbye.
