The cross-section of the tunnel linking France and Italy is located under a moutain, while the one joining two islands in Japan is built cross under the sea.
Seikan Railway Tunnel’s cross-section is almost 54 km long, which is nearly five times as long as Mont-Blanc Road Tunnel’s. Consequently, it took over 40 years to construct the cross-section in Japan, but only 8 years for the one between France and Italy.
The cross-section of the railway tunnel in Japan connecting Hakodate City and Aomori City is situated at the designated location 240m beneath the sea surface of Tsugaru Strait, while that of Mont-Blanc Road Tunnel in Europe is 3.5 km deep from the highest peak of the mountain.
